Cervical Cancer Radiation Therapy (Cont.)

Side Effects of Cervical Cancer Radiation Therapy

The side effects of radiation therapy will depend mainly on the dose of radiation and the part of your body that is being treated. Radiation to the abdomen and pelvis may cause:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Urinary problems
  • Loss of hair in the genital area
  • Redness, dryness, and tenderness of the skin
  • Dryness, itching, and burning in the vagina
  • A narrowed vagina.

Your doctor or nurse may suggest ways to relieve discomfort, which will help make follow-up exams easier. Although your doctor may advise you not to have intercourse during cervical cancer radiation therapy, keep in mind that most women can resume sexual activity within a few weeks after treatment ends.
