Gardasil has been licensed for use in girls as young as nine years old. Giving Gardasil to young girls will help make sure they are protected when they become sexually active.
Although Gardasil is currently licensed for women only, Gardasil may someday be approved to prevent male
HPV. Currently, vaccinating men for HPV is not recommended. More Gardasil research is needed before the HPV vaccine can be approved for use in men.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Gardasil for something other than the condition(s) discussed above. This is called an "
off-label" use. At this time, using the Gardasil vaccine for
cervical cancer or
genital warts in girls younger than 9 or older than 26 is an off-label use. Using Gardasil in boys or men to prevent HPV infection is also an off-label use.
